There are several types of ovary problems that can affect women. Some are temporary and harmless, while others need medical treatment. It is important not to assume that every pelvic pain or menstrual problem is caused by the ovaries.
Common ovary problems
- Ovarian cysts
- Fluid-filled sacs that develop on or inside an ovary.
- Many are harmless and disappear on their own.
- Larger or complicated cysts can cause pelvic pain, bloating, pain during sex, or irregular periods.
- Treatment: Observation and follow-up scans may be enough. Some cysts require medication or surgery, depending on their size, appearance, symptoms, and cause.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- A hormonal condition that can cause irregular periods, difficulty becoming pregnant, acne, increased facial/body hair, and weight changes.
- Treatment: There is no single cure, but symptoms can be managed with lifestyle changes and medicines prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- Ovarian torsion
- The ovary twists around the tissues supporting it, potentially cutting off its blood supply.
- Symptoms can include sudden, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
- Treatment: This is an emergency and usually requires urgent surgery.
- Ovarian infections
- Infection involving the ovaries can sometimes occur as part of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
- Symptoms may include pelvic pain, fever, unusual vaginal discharge, and pain during sex.
- Treatment: Usually requires antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- Endometriosis involving the ovaries
- Endometrial-like tissue can grow around the ovaries and form cysts called endometriomas.
- It can cause severe period pain, pelvic pain, and fertility problems.
- Treatment: Depending on the person, treatment may include pain medicines, hormonal treatment, or surgery.
- Ovarian cancer
- Less common than cysts or PCOS, but potentially serious.
- Possible warning signs include persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly, urinary changes, or unusual changes in bowel habits.
- Treatment: Depends on the type and stage and may involve surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or other specialist treatment.
🚨 When to seek medical help
A woman should see a healthcare professional if she has persistent pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, repeatedly irregular periods, unexplained bloating, difficulty becoming pregnant, or other symptoms that don’t go away.
Seek urgent medical attention for sudden severe abdominal/pelvic pain, especially when accompanied by vomiting, fainting, dizziness, fever, or heavy bleeding, because conditions such as ovarian torsion or a ruptured cyst can require immediate treatment.
Important: There isn’t one home remedy that can “solve” all ovary problems. The correct treatment depends on the specific condition and usually requires proper evaluation by a doctor or gynecologist.
